Day hike in the Red River Gorge

Last updated on October 16, 2019

I had some extra time on Friday and decided to head back down to the Red River Gorge in Daniel Boone National Forest to camp overnight at Koomer Ridge Campground and then meetup with some folks on Saturday. We took off from the trailhead on Saturday morning heading out to the Double Arch and Courthouse Rock via the Auxier Ridge trail.

This page describes most of the hike we did in detail however we ended up packing in around 10+ miles if memory serves. I just invested in a GPS device so I hope to post more of the maps I create and use on future hikes. But for now, it was All Trails on the iPhone.

My reading buddy at camp Friday night

I managed to have breakfast at Miguel’s Pizza. This amazing place where men and women from all walks of life converge to camp, eat, drink, be merry and, most importantly, rock climb. The atmosphere is nothing short of low key joy scented with food, sweat and the occasional whiff of patchouli. At the end of the day, five of us drove over to Miguel’s and shared a pizza together.

All in all it was the perfect Saturday afternoon. The RRG is one of those totally accessible areas to us folks here in Columbus that provide geological features that we don’t get to see here in the mostly flat heart of Ohio. That, and it boasts one of the most highly sought after rock climbing this side of the States.

Awesome day. Great conversations. Good people.
