Sitting behind a desk and writing code is a very fun business. Until of course you find that your midsection growing in a negative correlation to your endurance. Add the better part of a foodie decade in a City like Dallas and well… that’s just it.
I used to have a heavy bag in my basement in Clintonville that a friend gave me for Christmas one year. It was an awesome addition to the home gym I had at the time. Fun, exhausting and stress relieving. I sold the bag, bench, squat rack and free weights during the relocation to Dallas. I kept the gloves though.
They’ve been sitting on my nightstand made of someone else’s suitcases for years. It wasn’t until I had dinner with an old friend in September where he reminded me of how much I enjoyed hitting the bag. We were talking about various life choices, work and personal tracks while enjoying an incredibly unhealthy, but delicious, meal.
Some conversations cause ripples. Standing in my kitchen having breakfast on a gray November morning. 5 pounds lighter after two months of working out. I am reminded of falling asleep last night to an old movie hearing this line; “It’s a great thing when you realize you still have the ability to surprise yourself. Makes you wonder what else you can do that you’ve forgotten about.”
I’m still a developer, just a developer who is making different choices.
